deserted

It’s strange how every year something different grabs you from the well known story of Holy Week.  This year a line at the end of the section where Jesus is arrested has resonated more than others.

Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Matthew 26: 56

I’ve always known that Jesus died alone on the cross but the thought that not one of His friends stood by him struck me as strange.  3 years of miracles and wonders.  3 years of signs and teaching… and not one of them stayed.

  1. When we visited St Peter in Gallicantu and stood in the dungeon believed to be the one under Caiaphas’s house, we read Psalm 88. The last line is rather devastating…
