So, here’s where I’m at with Ben’s Musical Education iPod.  Thanks for all your brilliant suggestions!

I’ve put it in a PDF file because it’s pretty long!  Have a look and tell me what I’ve missed!

what you’ve missed? all MY bloody suggestions; THAT’S what you’ve missed! LOL!

  2. steven says:

disappointed you haven’t included any pet shop boys but not everyone’s cup of tea.

I would have chosen ‘my body is a cage’ for an Arcade Fire song and think you could choose better moby songs

  3. Mags says:

You went for “Hey Rhonda” over “Good Vibrations” on the Beach Boys? Tres interesting!
I’m a wee bit too into the folkies and obscuritie at the moment – so would suggest too many of them – but from Rock/Popish genres I would personally add –

    Johnny Cash
    Ray Charles
    Barenaked Ladies
    Damien Rice
    The Eagles – Hotel California
    Elton John
Eva Cassidy – Somewhere Over The Rainbow/Fields of Gold
GUILLEMOTS! Trains To Brazil – MUST MUST MUST
    Jethro Tull :p
The Mamas and the Papas – California Dreamin
    Orff – Carina Burana – O Fortuna
Paul Simon – Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes

Oh and get some Miles Davis! It’s never to early to start loving jazz.

Good list and thinking though! I like it. (except the McFly)

  4. Stewart says:

Leo, I’ve not got any of the songs you suggested. I really must get some folk!!! Or you could send me some!!!

Steven, I can’t find my Pet Shop Boys CD, but when I do they will be added. I’d put in everything Moby has ever done!!! I’ve got Play + B sides, Go, Last Night and 18 (which is lost!!!) Pick some tracks from those please…

Mags, thought Elton was in there. Will remedy that. Damien Rice.. OK. Which song? Eskimo is my fav! I’ve only got American Recordings by Jonny Cash and Hurt… maybe a little much for a 9 year old? Eva Cassidy will go in, as will O fortuna. Miles Davis and John Coltrane are in there…

And he likes McFly… hence the musical education!!!

  5. Mags says:

Haha, awesome – I thought I’d looked carefully, but they obviously slipped my eyes! Eskimo is lovely, also Amie though! You can’t go wrong with anything from “O”, in my opinion. Yeah – maybe Ring of Fire or something for Cash would be slightly more age appropriate!

i had to giggle at Pavarotti, Madonna, T.Rex, Meatloaf & Mcfly in such close proximity!

  7. I had considered suggesting Barenaked Ladies too on the earlier post, but didn’t think it would be best for a 9 year old!!
    Alison Krauss?

  8. Chris Long says:

First of all this is a BLOODY FANTASTIC endevour- as this is probably the education the young man will not get from school but it is so essential. Be careful not to scramble his poor hear with good musical overload…maybe that why you put Scouting for Girls and Sinead O’Connor in there, to offer his synapses respite from the quality musical stimulation?!

What about a little bit of the The Skids, The Ramones, Iggy and the Stooges – I know punk doesnt make the best selection of songs you want a nine year old to learn the words to but even still…

How about the more hippidy hop music (as opposed to Gangsta Rap), Sugarhill Gang, Beastie Boys, Jurassic 5 or even the Fresh Prince himself!?

G’d Luck with this musical odyssey!

  9. Stewart says:

Thanks everyone. You’ve all been really helpful.

I’ve given Ben the iPod and a nice new set of big headphones and he’s agreed to listen to all 266 songs and tell me which he likes and which he doesn’t. I think we might do a Part 2 because there are some great songs and whole genres like punk, rap and hip-hop that aren’t well represented. Oh, and no Led Zeplin either!!!

  10. Chris Long says:

Ha just what I came back to say no Zep – which would be a shame…and some Buddy Holly too!
